Rare Antique 1892 "Tobey Meter" No 1 Cast Iron Gas Meter Erie PA Metric Metal Co.
This meter comes with a bit of verbal history. The gentleman from whom I purchased this told me the story.  His grandfather  Had worked for the gas company. He had brought this home after it was removed from service as a souvenir. When is grandfather passed away way he took this to his house and kept it what's encapped it as a family heirloom.  After having a number of years he had no real use for it so decided to get rid of it. One of the most interesting features is thing features is that this was purchased in Fredonia New York. Fredonia is the location of the 1st  natural gas well in the United States in 1821. This was quickly followed by a gas distribution company. Natural gas was used exclusively for lighting until the invention of the bunsen burner in 1885.   I can't say where this meter was located in the Fredonia area.  It does still have the seal to prevent tampering.  Please ask questions, I can provide images as well.
