PIANO KEY DIP:
The key dip is the distance the key will travel before hitting the punching underneath the front rail. A felt punching, as well as certain paper and cardboard punching, are usually found beneath each key to adjust the final measurement.
KEY DIP BLOCK FUNCTION:
What the way these tools work is, put the key dip block on the front of the key, press it down, and measure it, and this of course is after the keys have been leveled, but you can feel if it’s level with the key next to it. If the top is level with adjacent keys, the dip is correct.

So the amount that goes down varies a little bit from one piano to the next, but in general, the key should go down between 3/8 to 7/16 of an inch when it comes to measuring the key dip.
