Here is a mass mortality plate of fossil Brachiopods, from the Mississippian sub-period of the Carboniferous Period, about 323 to 358 million years ago.
Most brachiopods died out in the Great Permian extinction of 252 million years ago.  However, a few brachiopods, such as the Lingula, survive to this day. They are hinged at the rear end, while the front opens and closes for eating, or for protection. Though they resemble some bivalves, brachiopods usually possess a symmetric shell, while bivalves often are lopsided.
Brachiopod fossils are also found on the reverse side of this plate. No paint or other restoration has been added.  The plate measures about about 6.7" by 4.5", and it weighs 2 lbs. 7.05 oz.
