Description
A beautiful collectible 4 stamp block set of U.S. postage stamps issued August 27th, 1959 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the "Drake Well", the first oil well drilled drilled in America, named for the owner, Edwin Drake. The well, located in Titusville, PA was selected after chemist Benjamin SIlliman Jr. determined that oil found in the region could be used as a high quality fuel for light sources. Drake's projects ran into financial difficulties and the day he was ordered to sell his materials to pay his debts he struck oil! Although Pennsylvania has been surpassed by other oil fields, it produced half of the world's oil until 1901.The stamps feature a rendition of the oil well surrounded by oil drilling equipment.
These stamps have never been used and are as fresh as the day they were sold at the Post Office over 60 years ago! Suitable for framing, they would make a great gift to anyone who works in or is interested in the history of the oil industry!
