Drake’s Well – First Oil Well in America
Mint set of 4 Stamps issued in 1959 to
    Commemorate the 100
    th
    anniversary of "Drake’s Well",
the first oil well drilled in America in 1859, named for
    the owner, Edwin Drake.
    The well, located in Titusville,
PA was selected after chemist Benjamin Silliman Jr.
determined that oil found in the region could be used as
a high quality fuel (kerosene) for light sources.
Although Pennsylvania has been surpassed by other
oil fields, it produced half of the world's oil until 1901.
These stamps are 63 years old and post office fresh.
Each set of 4 stamps includes a protective stamp mount,
suitable for framing or for mounting in your scrapbook.
